Help Wanted

We are looking for the right person, or persons, to invest their time and efforts in the future of RideSouth. This is not a part time job solicitation, or even a full time job solicitation. It is a search for local talent with bicycle mechanical skills, marketing and sales experience. It is a search for strong, mature, health-minded individuals that are firmly planted in the Jackson, Mississippi area, and individuals that have a passion for helping others enjoy their lives more while riding bicycles and paddling, or pedaling kayaks.

If you are a customer of RideSouth, all the better. If not, you should be. That is the best way to understand the level of commitment we are looking for. That is the best way to understand the huge influence a simple purchase like a cool bicycle or kayak can make in someone’s life. A total commitment to customer service, in every way, must be paramount and natural. Seeking near-perfection should be inherent and easily tolerated.

So, if you are interested or know someone who might be interested, please do not call or write and ask what hours are needed or what the pay or benefits will be. Do come by the shop and develop, or improve, a relationship with us to determine compatibility. We have found that compatibility with cool folks in the past- but family relocation, medical issues or travel plans have superseded.

Yes, we realize this search will probably be in vain, but nevertheless it needs to be done so that our existing customers will continue to advertise, and our future customers will come to know . . . RideSouth really is the best Way to Ride! Thank you.

Ride Report: Double Feature Weekend!

Ride Report: Double Feature Weekend

This past weekend we hosted our annual Natchez or Bust (NOB) Ride, and the first, Tackle the Tanglefoot Trail Ride! Now, that was a lot of miles ridden and driven in one weekend and here is only a very short summary:

The 2013 NOB was one to remember in many respects. The weather was perfect! As we gathered for the 7:30 AM launch, the light mist dutifully stopped and the group began pedaling toward clearing skies on the 52 degree October morning. A United States Government shutdown had prompted concern for restrooms along the Natchez Trace to be closed, but last minute action relieved us all, and the NOB ride was on.

This was the first official use of the RideSouth tour bus! Extraordinary SAG driver Lane, said it performed great! The rear doors were swung open at rest stops along the way displaying snacks, pickles, water and some very strong, blue Romulen Ale! (That was the popular description of the too strong Powerade prepared by this rider!)

This year we purchased lunch boxes from The Corner Bakery that were awesome! The meaty sandwiches, baked chips, fruit cup and huge, fresh cookie were enjoyed by all at Rocky Springs. We saw another tour bus with prominent markings at lunch that was traveling the Trace as well.

At the Natchez State Park, we loaded the bus with bikes including a recumbent tandem, and drove to the Magnolia Grille, Under the Hill. The wind had been coming from the west all day and must have affected the balloon pilots more than us as they elected not to fly in the comfortable fall temperatures. No matter, the River view was great, as was the Bloody Mary and the food! The service could have been faster as our waiter struggled to appease the group of about eighteen at dinner, but in the end we were pretty much on schedule.

Saying goodbye to our friends from Louisiana and Tennessee, we loaded up the bus as passersby snapped photos of us. The bus had a definite presence with the many recumbents on the roof towering about ten feet six inches above the road. We kept an eye out for low branches! There was room for more bikes, even! Thank you to all that joined us and especially to Liz, Angela and Lane for the superlative support!!!

We pulled out from our front row parking place with Billy announcing our departure schedule for the non-stop flight back to the RideSouth shop over the improvised bus intercom. After dark, the hundreds of deer along the Trace looked dazed, a lot like the tourists in Natchez, at the sight of our loaded bus, and remained on the side of the road as we went past. For much of the drive home we were looking directly into a gorgeous full moon taking up a large part of our front windshield! There was little traffic on this cool evening and we arrived on schedule. A great, incident-free day!

Tackling the Tanglefoot the next day was necessary as the Grand Opening Ceremonies had been rescheduled to the Sunday after NOB to allow all the speakers to make their football games. So . . . we commissioned the bus again and headed to Houston, Mississippi, about two and a half hours away on the North end of the Trace.

We parked at the Upper Elementary School and rode the half mile to the south end of the trail where the first ceremony was about to commence. There was good representation from our friends and even a mention of our effort by the Trail Manager speaker, Don Lott.

After the fireworks and whistle blowing in Houston, we rode to two more whistle-stops before arriving in Pontotoc for the symbolic silver spike driving. Of course, there were similar speeches and ceremony at each stop! The big ceremony was at Pontotoc that lasted almost an hour! Sunglasses and trees blocking the setting sun prompted a decision to head back to Houston even though one of our group was not back from New Albany, the north end of the trail.

The temperature was dropping rapidly and the setting sun through the trees provided a strobe effect. We had to pedal hard to stay warm and we were moving fast, except over the very rough bridges, when my second flat happened. Sharp rocks along the trail ended up causing three flats for this rider. Thanks to Charlie Moore for holding the light on flat fix number two! Number three happened as we turned off the trail at the Elementary school. Trail Manager Don was there checking on us. Thank you, Don!!

Billy Owen elected to tackle the whole 89 mile trail, netting 194 miles on the bike for the weekend! Way to go Billy! He arrived about five minutes after we did and we loaded the bus to head home. David Channell was on deer watch on the way back where we saw a huge buck calmly looking at us, probably curious about who we were!

So, if you are like the tourist in Natchez, or the buck along the roadside near French Camp, and are curious about who we are and why we go from one end of the State to the other riding funny looking bicycles, this is for you! It is good fun, good exercise . . . and there is no pain! One upright rider commented that no matter how many centuries he rides, they all hurt! We sympathize and welcome all riders and all bikes on our rides! Consider joining us for our next adventure and see for yourself why, no matter which direction you go in Mississippi, North or South . . . RideSouth is the Way to Ride!

Tackle the Tanglefoot!

This Sunday, October 20, the Tanglefoot Trail in North Mississippi will have three Grand Opening Ceremonies. The first two are at Houston and New Albany at 1:00 PM. These are the South and North ends of the trail. The next is at Pontotoc at 4:00 PM, the middle of the trail.

The RideSouth Bus will depart from the shop at 9:45 AM, for the elementary school in Houston, Mississippi. If you would like to join us, please e-mail your contact info and we will look for you on Sunday. There is limited space on the Bus, so let us know ASAP. We will return when all passengers have ridden their fill, which will probably be after dark, so if you plan to ride the entire trail, have working lights on your bike.

We hope you will join us in supporting the Grand Opening of another great Rails-to-Trails project in Mississippi! While many of you have enjoyed the Longleaf Trace in South Mississippi, the Tanglefoot Trail gives you folks up North a great recreational bike trail to enjoy with your friends and family that is closer to home! We hope to see you Sunday as you Tackle the Tanglefoot in your own way and we show once again that RideSouth is the Way to Ride!

Shop Closed Saturday

The RideSouth shop will be closed Saturday, October 19 for the Natchez or Bust Ride. Please call on us again soon!

Natchez or Bust Ride Saturday!

Just a few folks going for a ride on the Natchez Trace. That is the theme this Saturday as we leave from the RideSouth shop, and make our way down the scenic Natchez Trace to the Natchez State Park. Lane will pilot the new Bus as a SAG vehicle if anyone needs supplies. At this writing, Rocky Springs is closed, so we will stop along the way to provide fuel and supplies for the small group of riders.

When we get to the State Park, we will load bikes up and go to the Magnolia Grille on the River and have dinner, while watching the colorful, hot-air balloons land all around. After dinner, we will transport riders and bikes back to the shop. The weather will be perfect with temps in the 60s and 70s with a slight tailwind! There is even an overcast sky forecast to save on sunscreen!

We will have to cover up our small logo on the bus, says the Park Ranger yesterday. We should wear bright colors, have working lights and abide by all the rules of riding on the Trace. The Trace is a wonderful asset which we cyclists are grateful for every day! Please do not abuse it! Safety is paramount!!

If you are interested in joining our small group, please call the shop to discuss. Even though tension is high and times are tough, we want to help provide some cycle-therepy to our friends. Our logo may be covered up temporarily, but we hope you remember. . . RideSouth is The Way to Ride!

A New Day!

Bus Pic

As the sun rises this morning, we are presenting the new RideSouth Bus! You will see us at the shop, around town and on ride & kayaking events everywhere! We can transport bikes, velomobiles, kayaks and more importantly . . . up to twelve people! The versatility is amazing! Look for us on the Natchez or Bust Ride next weekend, October 19! There is a sign-up form on our website under Ride Schedules. Some folks have already found it!

Also, next weekend, the Trail Manager of the Tanglefoot Trail plans to have the opening ceremony on Sunday in Houston, October 20 at 1:00 PM. There is another ceremony Sunday afternoon in Pontotoc at 4:00 PM. If any of you want to ride up to Houston on Sunday morning (after the NOB Ride on Saturday!) and Tackle the Tanglefoot, the bus is leaving at 9:45 AM! Please RSVP.

We hope you have been riding a little and we encourage you to join us this Saturday morning at 8:00 AM (tomorrow) at the RideSouth shop for an old fashion Bread Ride! That’s right, we have some bread to bake and we need you to help us eat it! We will ride the Pelahatchie Bay area on trails and scenic drives! We look forward to tomorrow and every New Day! We hope you do, too!

A special note, the RideSouth shop will be closed on Saturday, October 19 for the NOB Ride.

End of September Sale!

We have many new and used bicycles and kayaks we are putting on sale until the end of September! Come by the shop to discuss models and prices! You will be glad you did!

The Tanglefoot Trail is officially open! We will publish the Opening Ceremony date as soon as we know for sure. It is supposed to be in early October. We are working on other rides in October and November. Details to come soon!

Unfortunately, the Tanglefoot Trail Opening Ceremony has been put off again. We were scheduled for September 21, but Trail Manager Don Locke says it will be in October now. That is OK with us as maybe we will have some fall weather to enjoy by then!

In other news, we will continue to launch our Saturday rides from the Natchez Trace Overlook at 8:00 AM. More and more trikes are coming out to enjoy the trails, and some new friendships are being formed! We hope you will join us this Saturday for some fun!

If you need motivation, get a copy of our friend’s book “One More Mountain”! Janet Buckwalter writes about meeting human challenges in a way that is very entertaining. Here is a summary by Janet:
