Hattiesburg for Lunch Ride

This Saturday looks to be a good day to ride on The Longleaf Trace into Downtown Hattiesburg for lunch! We plan to launch from Sumrall at 10:00 AM on Saturday morning. It is less than twenty miles, so everyone can do it on your trikes or bikes! The bus will leave the shop by 8:00 AM, so be there early to pack your steed on the trailer. The bus will depart from Sumrall around 4:00 PM, so plan your eating and riding accordingly! If you live in the area, please let us know of a couple of good lunch destinations. We plan to close the shop for the day, but will be here on Sunday if you are traveling from out-of-town. Please let us know if you will be taking the bus. There is no charge for the ride, but bring your lunch money, water, sunscreen and plan for a fun day! Weather looks good for shorts! Don’t you just love the Southern Winter weather these days!

Things you can’t do while cycling

Things you can’t do while cycling

Successful cycling requires focus. There are many stationary objects on the woodland trails that will interfere with your progress, if ignored. Though fewer in number on the lanes and roads, some of the objects there, move . . . and may even come after you! A wandering mind here may find itself in a heap of trouble.

Today there are many important things to wonder about, for sure. Our Planet, Country, Family, Work and Home – all need thought and all need action, just not while cycling. Our Health, Education and sometimes our general Attitude could use a boost also. But cycling is not the time to concentrate on those areas, normally. The only direction we can directly influence while cycling is the direction we and our bike take. And it is that direction only, that directly determines the outcome of our safe adventure.

Yes, there are many things you can’t do effectively while cycling. We think that should be on purpose. In fact, recumbent riders know there is one more unnecessary distraction we can, and do, avoid . . . Pain. There is no butt, back, neck or wrist pain to take away from your cycling enjoyment. So, we are free to set our direction, and directly influence our outcome, without any distractions other than the symphony of our own lungs, legs and heart . . . being directed by our own bicycle, through another safe and fun adventure.

We like adventure cycling. We like the places our country’s roads and trails can take us. In fact, we have a new map showing them, that covers a whole wall in the shop. We have bags, trailers, camping gear and other gear that will help you along. Of course we have bikes, trikes and velomobiles that are perfect for any excursion, anywhere. You will just have to leave your other worries behind because that is one thing you can’t do while cycling!

Home

Home

“He was afraid to go home because the man with the mask was there.” You may have heard this riddle sometime in your past. If you haven’t, the answer is below. Most folks, of course, “want” to go home. It is normally a place where we feel safe and in control. Many have more than one home. Some feel at home in their work environment or their play environment. Whether at the office, the gym, paddling a kayak, or riding a bicycle, you may have that peaceful and secure feeling that being home offers.

Unfortunately, some folks do not have a place to hang their hat. Their home is literally where their heart is. We are saddened to know just how many of these fellow Earthlings there are, and the number is growing daily. Many folks who have a home are finding it threatened, like the Americans in North Dakota. So, where do you feel most at home? Is it playing a game, reading your Twitter or Facebook feed? All of these pastimes have a “home” designed to make you feel good. How about baseball? There is one time when you might be afraid to go home in that game! (See above.)

The bottom line of this message is that we want you to feel at home here at RideSouth. This is one of our “homes” and we want to share it with you. As we have grave concerns about the future of our planetary home, we are considering adding solar power to our shop. We hope you will look into solar power for your home or business. We are inviting you to our business home these next few weeks to see what changes we have made, and to take advantage of the many sales we have going on to clear inventory. We hope you like them and that you too feel at home here! After the holidays, we are planning a customer appreciation party, so please stay tuned for that announcement!

We truly appreciate ALL of our customers over the past nineteen years and hope to continue serving you and your friends for many more years! So, don’t be afraid to visit our home! We will make you feel welcome and help you find what you are looking for! Happy Holidays to everyone!!

Personal Best

Yesterday, we put together our first America’s Choice Ride on the LongLeaf Trace. We coupled the Birthday Challenge concept with a conversation about the upcoming Presidential Election in one event. Here are some pics from the event:

americas-choice-ride-2016

Riders were asked to choose a colored ribbon representing the person they would like as president, and display it on their mirror. The four choices were red, blue, yellow and green, for Republican, Democratic, Libertarian or Green parties, respectfully. We offered information on the four party platforms also. More on the results later.

Then, we challenged riders to begin riding toward Hattiesburg, from Sumrall. The general idea for the day was to ride your age, in kilometers, and discuss your voting choices with fellow riders. This seemed to be a good balance of energies. We think most folks met their challenge and some exceeded theirs!

The weather was picture-perfect and it was fun to trike the trace with customers and friends. The group I was with decided to go all the way to downtown Hattiesburg to explore the newest extension of the trace. It was fun seeing the tailgaters, and smelling the food cooking for the Southern/Charlotte football game. I think they had fun watching our long line of recumbents as well. We made our way to the train depot and tried to crash a wedding reception, but were directed off the train platform by an armed guard. No worries, as the line of wedding guests seemed to still enjoy our procession as well as we enjoyed theirs.

Too bad everyone didn’t make it downtown, as that was one of the many highlights of the day for this rider. But there were many highlights. The bus ride from the RideSouth shop, the excellent food from Chick-fil-A, the sense of community and support from everyone, all together made the event. Riders told me they achieved their personal best ride, and what a great day to do it on! Everything went well except for one flat on Slidell Jim’s recumbent bike/with side car. Friends helped to retrieve him and his dog Charly to the lunch area, where both seemed good natured about it.

Another highlight for me was to discover so many supporters for the Green Party. It has been my personal experience that once properly introduced, most folks really like Jill’s policies and platform. Too bad the corporate media has worked very hard to avoid that proper introduction! Even so, there were about as many green ribbons given out at the start as red ribbons. There were a few yellow ribbons and one blue ribbon asked for. Some folks showed up after the start and did not get a ribbon. Some did not want to indicate their choice for president.

Meet Jill here:Meet Jill Stein

In summary, the America’s Choice Ride was the most meaningful event we have ever organized . . . my personal best. The personal achievements, the local sense of community witnessed throughout the day, and the far-reaching and all-important consequence of our actions for our country, and our planet, coupled with some great fellowship, made the day awesome! Thank you to all that participated!

To heal America and achieve Democracy will require that we all find our personal best. I want my grandchildren to have the opportunity to have grandchildren of their own. War, hate, or ignoring the two, will not get it done.

America’s Choice Ride

America’s Choice Ride – November 5, 2016 – Longleaf Trace

Those of you who remember our Birthday Challenge Rides on the Longleaf Trace will want to come out and participate in our first, and maybe our last, America’s Choice Ride on the fabulous Longleaf Trace on November 5! We plan to launch from Sumrall at 10:00 AM on the Saturday before our historical presidential election on Tuesday, November 8, 2016.

We hope to challenge you to ride your age in miles, or kilometers, like the old Birthday Challenge rides, but with a new wrinkle. We hope to challenge you to represent your choice for President as well! We will have Jill, Gary, Donald and Hillary ribbons representing the four candidates in the 2016 Presidential race. So if you are proud of who you want to vote FOR, decorate yourselves and your trikes accordingly! If you want to keep it a secret, we respect that too!

So, the question is, are you up to it? Of course the miles, or kilometers, will be hard to do for some of us, but are you up to a civilized discussion about the future of our country, and our planet? That may be the hardest part, but at least we can burn off the nervous energy on our trikes, or bikes! Just as we have four presidential candidates, we will have four divisions for the ride. A fast trike division, a slow trike division, a fast bike division and a slow bike division should just about include everyone!

Ride the RideSouth bus to Sumrall and enjoy Chick-fil-A minis and fruit on the way! We will also have sandwiches and drinks after the ride for you to refuel on. The bus will leave the shop at 8:00 AM, so please arrive early to pack your bikes. We plan to pull the trailer so we can accommodate your trikes or bikes. If you prefer, you can meet us in Sumrall at the trail entrance for a 10:00 AM launch. Like America, this ride is open to everyone who can behave! There is no formal charge for the ride, but please let us know if you plan to participate so we can plan accordingly!
